Legal Officer

1. Reporting to the Country Head, lead all corporate strategic and tactical legal initiatives,
2. Lead all legal related matters for sales and other activities of the business  
3. provide management with effective legal advice on company strategies and their implementation,
4. manage all  legal related function of the business in Sri Lanka,
5. obtain and oversee the work of outside counsel, and
6. be directly involved in complex business transactions in negotiating critical contracts and business transactions.

Main Responsibilities

• Participate in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures and programs and provide continuing counsel and guidance on legal matters and on legal implications of all matters.
• Serve as legal advisor on all major business transactions, including acquisitions of properties and companies, divestitures and joint ventures.
• Represent the company in any legal cases filed against or on behalf of the company.
• Judge the merits of major court cases filed against or on behalf of the company, work with the appropriate executive(s) to define a strategic defense and approve settlements of disputes where warranted
• Assume ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the Company conducts its business in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Structure and manage the company’s internal legal function.
• Selection, retention, management and evaluation of all outside counsel.
• Advise on legal aspects of the company’s financing. Including assessing and advising on current and future business structures and legal entities.
• To oversee the development and operation of the legal filling and record system.

Candidate Requirement

• The successful candidate should hold a law degree and be a member of the bar in Sri Lanka.
• Experience in the property and real estate development industry will be an added advantage.
• Be business savvy  
• Admitted to practice law in Sri Lanka. Minimum of six years of experience in a law firm environment, as a practicing litigation lawyer.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including outside attorneys, senior management, and business associates
• Ensures that within in scope of role, activities are carried out to high standards of integrity in accordance with policies and procedures.
