JOB SUMMARY:

As part of the Pearson's Learning Technologies’ GTO Department, the Senior Application Engineer is responsible of Pearson Technology application portfolio. The Application Engineer works closely with system administrators, source code management, software development, QA, project management, and business users to ensure that Pearson applications meet business objectives and services quality/performance targets.

 The position involves installing, supporting, configuring, and maintaining middleware software for development, test, and production servers in geographically-disparate, multi-tiered environments by applying Unix, Windows, Apache, Tomcat, IIS and Web Logic expertise. It will also provide monitoring, automation and maintenance scripting for all application tiers as well as writing thorough documentation. This position will assist with the development and implementation of support standards and practices. This position will be heavily involved in the scheduling, maintenance, and administration of highly-technical integrated virtual and physical environments shared by multiple development teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor multiple systems and environments to ensure stability, performance and availability.
  • Research application integration and configuration defects.
  • Maintains third party tools.
  • Develop automation tool & scripting
  • Conduct research and develop solutions for the technology needs of the department.
  • Analyze system for defects and document possible resolutions.
  • Conduct disaster recovery on system application failures.
  • Resolve application integration and configuration defects.
  • Compile, generate, and maintain weekly activity report.
  • Provide after-hours support for system outages and planned maintenance events.
  • Perform On-Call duties as part of a department On-Call rotation.
  • Monitor multiple systems and environments to ensure stability, performance and availability.
  • Compile, generate, and maintain weekly activity report.
  • Leading & mentoring team members in the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • General knowledge of emerging Internet-based technologies
  • Windows IIS, MSMQ, Active Directory, VB Script, Windows 2003/2008, Power Shell scripting or Red hat Linux/Unix, Web logic, Apache web server, Tomcat, Perl, Bash Scripting,
  • Experience in writing and analyzing DB queries and procedures
  • Client server network infrastructure experience preferred
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to any given situation
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, IS, or Electrical Engineering preferred.  Three (4) plus years’ experience working in an internet environment with senior level experience or leadership; or equivalent education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
